Leni, a small-town, blue-collar lesbian, despairs of ever finding true love—or even just a Friday night date. Pickings are slim, but romantic woes aside, she’s happy living in the place she was born and raised.

Then Leni gets a new job as a nightshift cook at The Jester’s Court, a bustling roadside truck stop, where she encounters an enigmatic colleague nicknamed Yak. Finding herself fascinated with the woman, Leni disregards all advice to the contrary and attempts to befriend her fellow chef. Yak proves to be a hard nut to crack, but what’s harder still is deciphering why everyone lives in fear of her.

When events spiral out of control and Leni learns the dangerous truth, she must decide if winning Yak’s heart is worth the price she might have to pay.

This short story earns four stars from me because the main character had a great tone of voice. Leni (the protagonist) was drawn so well that I could really "feel" her as a person. I immediately related to her. She wasn't perfect (not one of the "raven-haired tomboys" that seem to overpopulate lesbian fiction). She's full of hope and insecurity - an awkward, small-town girl from a big family trying to find her own way.

I also liked the plot premise and love interest. It had enormous potential. However, I don't think that potential was realized. The author was flirting with real danger, but in my opinion, pulled back to the detriment of the story.

Okay, so I'm not one of those readers who needs to have "good" protagonists. Main characters are more interesting when they're bad: give me a protagonist who is selfish, angry, bitter, insecure, greedy... or even crazy. In the right hands, it makes a story more fun. Nobody's perfect, and everyone rationalizes the crappy stuff they do. Give me a reason to buy into a flawed character. Then put that character into a position where she has to make a choice... and let's watch the fallout.

Yak.... A young woman with poor impulse control and paranormal abilities. Bad things happen to people who make her angry.

I'm giving the author credit for flirting with a dangerous romantic character. But Yak could have been a lot more dangerous than she actually was. I think this story only scratched the surface of what Yak could have been. And it seemed that the author did a fair amount of rationalizing, too. I didn't really need justification for the things Yak did. I needed to see what choices Yak was going to make regarding her power, and I wanted to know if she felt guilty, or if she felt... empowered... when hurting people (my vote goes for empowered... villains are always more fun than heroes).

Since the story never really deals with the consequences of Yak's actions, she simply isn't as scary as the narrative makes her out to be. She's forever a victim, instinctively taking revenge on bad people who deserve it. And that's a shame. Because I wanted Yak to be menacing. Why not explore Yak's dark side?

The ending was abrupt. No spoilers here, but the ending left me with a whole lot of questions and no resolutions. There are some plot elements that are never explained, and that was annoying.

The love scene was tasteful, but very sweet. I enjoyed it.

So my takeaway: the protagonist makes the story with a compelling tone of voice. The love scene in the shower was sweet. But Yak was disappointing.

So three stars overall.

Yak edition by Lois Cloarec Hart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Leni goes to work at The Jester on the midnight shift. There she meets an odd woman named Yak aka Aislin. Aislin is a loner and most everyone seems to avoid her. Leni feels for her and reaches out. However maybe all the rumors about Yak arent just rumors. Will Leni stick around to find out? Read it, you'll like it. I know I did.
A Novella

When you live in a small town and you are a lesbian, true love is hard to find. Leni, a blue collar lesbian, is in despair. Even a date appears to be too much to ask for. Love interests or lack of them aside, Leni likes living in the town she was born in and being with her family.

Leni's life is about to change when she gets a new job as a nightshift chef at the Jester's Court, a busy roadside truck stop. Leni meets a reclusive woman nicknamed Yak. Leni is in awe of Yak. But despite her best efforts, she can't find out why Yak is a loner and why everyone is avoiding her like she has the plague. When events take a turn for the worse and Leni learns the truth about Yak, she has to decide whether falling even more in love with Yak will be worth paying the price.

A wonderfully well written story that left me wanting more. I loved the characters of Leni and Yak. They are so vastly different from each other and not only from the class divide aspect, Leni is outgoing, Yak is a loner and has an air of mystery surrounding her. I loved the interaction between the two of them.

For a short book, there is a lot crammed into it. The touch of mystery and suspense throughout kept me turning the pages until all too soon I'd reached the end.

I'll be watching out for more from Lois Cloarec Hart in the future.
I'll start by saying that I've read Lois Cloarec Hart before and enjoyed her books (Coming Home and Broken Faith are great stories). This story though was not great. The writing was, but not the story.

Warning there are spoilers from here on.

Leni and Aislin (better known as Yak) work together. Aislin keeps to herself and Leni is intrigued. Despite warnings from her best friend of ominous things caused by Aislin, Leni gets to know her. Aislin has some kind of power which manifests whenever someone is mean to her or angers her in any way. This means that she can't even go home because she's used this power on her little brother to the extent that he had to be sent away for his own safety. The reader though is still supposed to think that Aislin is a good romantic match for Leni, based entirely on the fact that the sex is great.

Yeah... Not so much. The last line of the story also implies that Aislin has used these powers (more than once) on Leni, always uplifting to end a book with implied violence between the two romantic leads. That really warms the heart.

I don't recommend this one, but do recommend readers check out Cloarec Hart's other work.
liked how the characters interacted together. good flow. wished there was more to read but it works. is not graphic
I loved this book. I really like the characters; Leni is a funny goof and Aislin is sweet but very dangerous. If you like easy going dark comedies, you'll love this book. You're not meant to take it seriously, just go with the flow.
I wrote the review because I got a different view of the short story compared to other reviews claiming this is a feel good love story. This story is a wind up to an abusive person and relationship.

Spoiler alert!!! One of the main characters has the ability that when upset she can hurt people and/or cause events surrounding them to kill a person she directs her "power" to. All good and well when used for good, I guess right? Well the two main characters end up together (of course) but this "power" ends up being used on her partner and causing injuries and the character shows absolute signs of already being in that abusive partner mindset of excusing it.
